LED Billboard Power Consumption

LED billboard Power Consumption Less for Energy-saving

LED billboard power consumption determines the ongoing electricity costs. Most of the time, the billboard is illuminated 24 hours a day. It has hundreds of thousands of power consuming LEDs. So it is absolutely important to better understand the significance of  power consumption and energy impact.

The max the power consumption is the white while the average is displaying content at the highest brightness. Therefore, the actual power consumption depends on how you use it and the environment. As LED technology has matured, the efficiency has improved. Nevertheless, even among products manufactured today, there is a large range in performance between different manufacturers.

What is LED Billboard?

LED billboard, or digital billboard, is a direct-view outdoor LED displays. It is comprised of hundreds of thousands of LEDs that display pixelated content on a continual basis. The main appeal of LED billboard is that it allows for dynamic, bright, eye-catching advertisements. Therefore it can notify drivers of targeted opportunities or real-time information and alerts. Unlike traditional static billboards, advertisements on digital billboard can change easily and frequently. It can also be tailored to the season, week, day, or even to the minute. Most importantly, you can sell to several different advertisers simultaneously in a given time. And you can divide the billboard into different parts to display different content at the same time.

What determines the LED billboard Power consumption

LED billboards are custom. So they are different from brightness, view angle, refresh rate, and contrast. Materials are also essential for power consumption. It is the LED display quality to determine the power consumption. For example,

  • High brightness uses more consumption.
  • High contrast uses more consumption.
  • Less view angle results in less power consumption.
  • High refresh rate uses more consumption.
  • More pixels uses more consumption.
  • Gold-bonding LEDs has less power consumption.
  • PWM driving IC has less power consumption
  • Display content has different power consumption

There are two kind of LEDs, Through-Hole LEDs (DIP) and Surface-Mount-Device (SMD). DIP LED billboard has higher brightness, less power consumption, and high contrast, better heat dissipation. However, the pixel pitch is usually larger than 10m, thus less pixel resolution. SMD LED billboards can be from 2.5mm to 10mm, for high definition. And the view angle is wider, but less brightness and more power consumption.

LEDs are the largest contributor of digital billboard power draw. But other components such as such as power supplies, cooling systems, lighting controls, and control systems also consumes electricity.

How to reduce the LED billboard power consumption

First, it is the LED display quality and efficacy. We recommend use high quality materials and design in your budget. Besides, check the environment in advance before production to get the most suitable screen.

Beyond the LED display quality and efficacy, display brightness levels and image content are other variables that significantly affect the energy consumption of LED display. Therefore, we can use other strategies to reduce the overall energy, including brightness control, smart cooling system, more efficient power supply, and cathode technology. The light sensor control the billboard’s brightness according to the surrounding. For example, the brightness can only be 1,000-2,000nits at night. Then, the power consumption is less.

Cathode technology is the innovative technology that we have used for many billboards. It saves at least 30% power consumption as classic ones at the same condition. Our HHEO series are the cathode technology LED display. Recently, we are developing it to other outdoor LED displays.

How to get the power consumption data

Every LED screen has its max power consumption and average power consumption data before shipping. If you need the data to have an idea how much you need to pay the ongoing electricity costs. You can check fixed outdoor LED displays for rough data. Please contact us if you need the exact data.
